PROJECT FUNDRAISING: COMPLETE

Thank you to all of our donors!

Canopy Project of Kawartha Lake’s first planting project was BGC Kawarthas. To date, 44 trees have been planted on the 7 acre site on Lindsay Street South, and funds have been raised to finish the project with about 30 more trees and a garden of blueberry bushes. Final planting dates will be confirmed.

Major supporters of this project have been Mackey Funeral Home and Stoddart’s Funeral Home, Janice Cripps, John Ireland, Fleming College as well as many individual and corporate donors. One of the highlights has been the involvement of volunteer students and Club Leaders in Training who have helped to water the trees.

CPKL has chosen the Boys and Girls Clubs of Kawartha Lakes (now known as BGC Kawarthas) as its first project. The group will improve the diversity and coverage of the urban canopy on the 7-acre site on Lindsay Street South, which is a hub for families, fully accessible to the public, and connected to city trails.

BGC has a site plan which denotes the species and placement of trees on its 7-acre property. With the insight of Fleming Urban Forestry Technician program, the designated species have been diversified in order to support more native species and to encourage biodiversity.

Public and club member use of the site will be enhanced with additional tree coverage and shade. Thousands of children and their families use the site and its outdoor facilities each year.

New Committee Establishes Fund to Increase the Urban Canopy

Canopy Project Kawartha Lakes (CPKL) has established a fund under the administration of the Community Foundation of Kawartha Lakes (CFKL) to increase the urban tree canopy in the settlement areas of the city, while also adding to the understanding of the benefits of a greener and more diverse landscape.
